The story, which was written by Vy Vincent Ngo, was originally released in 1996. It had been in development hell for several years before it was finally filmed in 2007. Among the directors who worked on it were Michael Mann, Tony Scott, Gabriele Muccino , and Jonathan Mostow.
The MPAA gave the film a PG-13 rating in the US. The changes were made to prevent it from getting an R rating, which had been given twice before.
Columbia Pictures released the film in the US on July 2, 2008. It was generally praised by critics for its visual effects and performances, but it also suffered from its execution.
