Based on DC Comics’ Suicide Squad team, The Suicide Squad is an American superhero film released in 2021. It is a follow-up to 2016’s Suicide Squad and is the 10th movie in the DCEU, which is a part of Warner Bros. Pictures’ stable. Directed by James Gunn, the film stars an ensemble cast that includes John Krasinski, Idris Elba, Joel Kinnamon, Pete Davidson, Alice Braga, Viola Davis, and more. 

It follows a group of criminals who form a task force called the Suicide Squad to reduce their sentences. The group is sent to destroy the remnants of Starro the Conqueror in the South American nation of Corto Maltese. Before it can fall into the government’s control, they must destroy it. In March 2016, David Ayers was supposed to return as the director of the follow-up to the Suicide Squad. However, in December, he decided to leave the project. Gavin O’Connor was then hired by Warner Bros. in September 2017.

 He left the project due to creative differences. James then replaced him in October 2018. Before he was hired to write and direct the film, he was fired by Marvel Studios and Disney. James was inspired by the war films and the 1980s Suicide Squad comics. He also explored new characters in the story, which is different from the first film. The film was filmed in various locations such as Georgia, Portugal, and Panama. The film debuted in the UK on July 30, 2021, and it was released in the US on August 5.

 It was highly praised by critics, who gave it a positive review. They also praised the visual style and the performances of the actors. It became the most-streamed movie in the DCEU on HBO Max. Unfortunately, it did not perform well at the box office, and it only managed to gross $171.7 million worldwide. This was due to factors such as the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the availability of the film on the channel. 

In January 2022, John Cena’s spin-off television series, Peacemaker, premiered on HBO Max. The channel also announced that it was developing two more spin-off series.
